FC Žalgiris began their UEFA Europa league campaign with a win in Faroe Islands. Goal by Liviu Antal and late header by Mamadou Mbodj helped the Lithuanian club to a 2:1 win over KI Klaksvik in a first qualifying round tie.

The trip to Faroe Islands was a complicated matter – the Vilnius club only learned their opponents few days before the game, while a flight from Copenhagen was cancelled due to weather conditions. The game was postponed by a day as the team was able to reach Torshavn only 3 hours before the scheduled fixture.

The match day itself was sunny and Žalgiris eventually made their initiative pay off on 39 minutes as forward Liviu Antal headed in a corner to open their Europa league goals account.
At the start of the second half Antal came close to a second but hit the woodwork. Eventually KI Klaksvik managed to came back to the game and earned a penalty. Donovan Slijngard was adjudged to have used his hand in the box and Joannes Bjartalid converted from the spot to make it 1:1.
Žalgiris pushed for the win and found the goal after another corner a minute in to added time. This time it was defender Mamadou Mbodj who scored a header and he went off to celebrate with the loyal travelling support.
The second leg is scheduled for July 19 in Vilnius.
