With three weeks left before first UEFA Europa league qualification game FC Žalgiris parted ways with head coach Aurelijus Skarbalius.

45-years-old football specialist took over Žalgiris after last season, when Green and Whites finished in the second place in A lyga. Skarbalius signed a 3 years length contract with Žalgiris and returned to Lithuania after more than two decades spent in Denmark.
Under his guidance Žalgiris started in A lyga with two victories and two draws but after that suffered a hard defeat against Jonava. At the start of second round Žalgiris had a scorless draw against FC Kauno Žalgiris and lost 2 points against FC Stumbras. At the 11th matchday of A lyga Žalgiris lost at home against defending champions FC Sūduva 2:3. But after this loss greens seemed to get it going and won four game in a row. They got an easy win in LFF cup tournament at the end of May as well.
At the start of June FC Žalgiris had a two weeks length pause in A lyga because of the National teams friendly games. On 16th of June Žalgiris lost to FC Stumbras forcing Skarbalius to call out his players by saying that they were too „arrogant“. On 20th of June Žalgiris won 2:0 against FC Palanga. Next day club announced that Skarbalius was sacked due to poor results in A lyga.
After 17 games with 34 points FC Žalgiris is in the second place of A lyga. In the first position with 42 points sits FC Sūduva. Marijampolė team has one more game in their pocket as well. Žalgiris will meet Sūduva on 27th of June in the Marijampolė.
On 10th of July FC Žalgiris will play first game in UEFA Europa league qualification. Opponent will be decided after FC Birkirkara from Malta and KI Klaksvik from Faroe Islands meeting in the preliminary round.
FC Žalgiris expresses gratitude to Skarbalius for a hard work that he put in the team from the beginning of the season and wishes best of luck in his future professional career.
