The trip to Klaipėda as difficult as always, but FC Žalgiris managed to start the new A lyga campaign with a victory by beating Atlantas 2:1.

The first goal of the game came on 21 minutes, when Mantas Kuklys calmly dispatched a penalty kick. After six minutes Žalgiris doubled their lead – Brazilian forward Elivelto was the first to get on to a Vytautas Lukša cross and put the ball into the net.

However, hosts pulled one back on 62 minutes. Former Žalgiris man Linas Pilibaitis‘ pass found Andrey Panyukov, who scored on his return to Lithuanian championship. Though Atlantas played better in the second half, the side from the capital managed to hold on to their lead until the final whistle.

"It is never easy to play here, Atlantas always plays with double the energy against Žalgiris and does everything to take away some points. It is good, that we passed this first test with victory. I hope that we will continue to collect the points," said head coach of Žalgiris Valdas Dambrauskas.
