The first half saw both teams playing with caution, not making any unnecessary risks.

Blagojevic tried his luck early on - in the 4th minute of the encounter - from a long distance, but missed the target.

In the 21st minute of the match, Vytautas Lukša tried to cross the ball into the box, although it was too strong and flew over the bar.

As the half approached its end, both teams became more active. Saulius Mikoliūnas of Žalgiris found Linas Pilibaitis in the box with a high ball, but the header from the #77 was too weak and the goalkeeper easily caught the ball.

Astana's Nazarbajev had his attempt from long range in the 38th minute, but Saulius Klevinskas was up to the challenge.

FK Žalgiris wasted a dangerous counter-attack opportunity in the 42nd minute of the match, when Astana goalkeeper Eric's long kick found a Žalgiris player in the middle, who, luckily for the away side, could not control the ball.

A minute later Muzikov of Astana had a chance to break the deadlock, but missed.

The second half brought more energy within the teams.

Blagojevic's powerful volleyed attempt after a corner kick in the 57th minute forced Astana's goalkeeper Eric to save his team from a definite goal.

Žalgiris did get the ball into the net in the 76th minute of the encounter, when Kaludjerovic knocked the ball down with his head to Elivelto, who smashed the ball from the edge of the area past the hands of the Astana goalkeeper, only for the goal to be disallowed due to an offside call on Kauldjerovic.

Moments later a beautiful combination play from right to left by the hosts saw Donovan Slijngard shoot on goal from a narrow angle, but the ball hit the post and went out for a goal kick.

The best chance of the match came in the 86th minute, when a perfectly executed counter-attack by FK Žalgiris led to Kaludjerovic going one on one with the goalkeeper, but he could not finish as the shot was saved. Kuklys attempted to hit the rebound, but the shot was also parried away.

The match ended 0:0 and will be decided in the reverse fixture in a week's time in Kazakhstan.
