FK Žalgiris Vilnius decided to strengthen its squad and signed Lithuanian national team defender Marius Žaliūkas.

The defender, who has spent most of his career playing in Scotland, has been training with the club for the past few weeks.

“I know Marius since we were both at Heart of Midlothian FC. When we knew that Georgas Freidgeimas will depart the club, we wanted to change him with another Lithuanian national team player, so Marius was our target number one.

“We are happy about his decision to join our team as there isn’t a lot of high quality defenders in Lithuania. I think he will be a very good addition to our club”, - said clubs’ sporting director Mindaugas Nikoličius.

During his career, M. Žaliūkas played for FK Inkatas, Kaunas FBK, then he spent almost a decade at Heart of Midlothian FC. Later the defender played in England for Leeds United and in 2014 he decided to go back to Scotland, signing for Rangers Glasgow.
