This Monday FC Žalgiris Vilnius found out its opponent in UEFA Champions league second qualification round. Lithuanian champions will have to face FF Malmo from Sweden.
The first leg will be played in Sweden on 15th of July at 7 pm. The second leg will be played in Vilnius on 21st of June.
FF Malmo is the current champion of Swedish Allsvenskan league. Last year the club played in UEFA Champions league group A against such teams as Juventus Turino, Olympiacos and Atletico de Madrid.
This year FC Žalgiris had a chance to played against six seeded opponents in UEFA Champions league qualification: FC Celtic, Bate Borisov, FF Malmo, HJK Helsinki, FC Molde and FC Midtjylland.
After the draw ceremony FC Žalgiris head-coach Valdas Dambrauskas said that despite a dangerous opponent his team’s goal does not change, Lithuanian champions wants to pass the second round of qualification.
“All these six months were a part of preparation for Champions league. If we will be strong psychologically, everything will be up to us. FF Malmo is a dangerous club, they have a specific playing style. But I believe we will be a tough opponent for them.
A statistics show that those who play second leg in their home has a greater chance to pass to the other qualification round. We have to achieve a good result in Sweden, so we could win in the LFF stadium”, - he said.
FC Žalgiris captain Deividas Šemberas said that his team has reached a level when no opponent in the qualification is unbeatable.
“FF Malmo is better only in statistics. I have no doubt that there will be a good game and in the end we will win. I believe I will come back from my injury just in time for the first game”, - said the midfielder.
FC Žalgiris Sporting director Mindaugas Nikoličius has praised his club’s opponents as FF Malmo is one of the best teams in Sweden at this time. Although he expects his club to go to the third qualification round.
“I think that FF Malmo will worry about playing with us. We trained in Brazil and Cyprus, we have a lot of good players. We play and work in the higher level than other teams in Lithuania. We all remember what we achieved in Europa league qualification in 2013, we all want to achieve more this year”, - M. Nikoličius said.
The first leg of the second qualification round will be held on 15th of July. The game in Sweden will start at 7 pm. The second led will be held in Vilnius on 21st of July. The time of the game will be announced in the coming days.
